"On Saturday (June 25), after the convention officially ends, a service project organized through Catholic Charities at the St. Joseph House of Hospitality will be offered from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Readers of the Pittsburgh Catholic are encouraged to lend a hand alongside the journalists with repairs, cleaning and social activities."

Volunteer Opportunities

...opportunities to be a Friend to our residents at St. Joseph's...

Resident Focused Opportunities
These volunteer opportunities will work directly with our residents at St. Joseph House of Hospitality.

Ongoing and flexible:
· One on one “mentoring” St. Joseph residents.
· Recreational excursions: movie theater, baseball games, basketball games, etc.
· Join Bible study (men’s fellowship format) Every Friday 3-4pm at the House
· Open and man the clothing room at the House (30 minutes on a weekday)

One or two dates during Summer:
· Day-long fishing excursion to Somerset County

Special needs:
· Accompany residents to the doctor’s office, or VA for check-ups, testing, exams, etc.

Support Focused
These opportunities will support the overall operation of St. Joseph House of Hospitably for our residents.

Ongoing and flexible:
* Occasional pick up of donated furniture. Requires a pick-up truck or van.
* Organize food drives conducted by church or civic groups for specific food items such as pasta or cereal.

Date specific:
* Annual Bluegrass Benefit Concert Friday afternoon/evening in April
* Need help before (setting up tables, etc) during, and after concert
* Pre-event Ticket sales
* Sale/purchase of program advertisements
* Donation of prizes for drawings

Volunteer Requirements
* Complete Catholic Charities volunteer application and paperwork, attend orientation at St. Joseph House of Hospitality.
* Criminal and Child Abuse Background Clearances required within first 30 days of volunteering.

St. Joseph House of Hospitality, a program of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, was founded in 1937 in Pittsburgh's Hill District. A pioneer in delivering services to the poor and homeless, St. Joseph House offers supportive housing in the form of single room occupancies and congregate living.

St. Joseph House of Hospitality's professional staff of religious and lay persons serve males over 50 years of age with a limited income and who have been homeless or who are in danger of becoming homeless.

Residents of St. Joseph's receive:

* Room and board
* Coordination of services
* Drug and alcohol counseling
* Mental health counseling services
* Veterans assistance
* Visiting nurses and podiatrists
* Visiting barber
* Chaplain
* Recreation
* Clothing
